The Need for a Strong Centralized Republic Form of Government

Thomas Paine made this profound statement about government vs. society:

“Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamities [are] heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer! Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built on the ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of conscience clear, uniform, and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the same prudence which in every other case advises him out of two evils to choose the least. Wherefore, security being the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least expense and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others.”

Those who believe that we should not support a strong, centralized, Republic* government are those who trust the “[human] impulses of conscience clear, uniform, and irresistibly obeyed.” And yes, if we could trust human impulse to conform to our shared humanity and good conscience, then we would not need a strong government. However, at no time in Earth’s history has there existed a group of people who think and act always consistent with their humanity and treat others who do not agree with them with respect and equality. Today, most are divided by inhumane religious ideologies, and the majority sell the sign and token of their humanity for money.

A Federal government is the main cause of our problems. A Federal government is a system that divides up power between a strong national government and smaller local governments. Local governments are influenced by the emotions and prejudices of the local people; and consequently, have been the cause of all of the domestic social divisions and persecutions experienced throughout the history of the United States.

*A Republican form of government is when the power is explicitly vested in the people, who in turn exercise their power through elected representatives. The representatives, if forced by a strong Constitution to come to a consensus of unanimity before any law can be passed**, can eliminate localized prejudices that lead to the division of the people.

If we could trust that all people would react without personal prejudice and always humanely towards others, then we would hardly need a government.
