The answer is simple. The answer is intelligent. The answer is humane.
THumP®’s President would have called a Worldwide Press Conference, announcing that the United States was going to take unprecedented action to end the war.
This would have been the short, but powerful message:
Date: August 1, 1945.
“On August 6, 1945, the United States of America will drop an atomic weapon of mass destruction on the Izu Peninsula in Japan to demonstrate its powerful destructive means. This weapon will devastate this area of the earth and destroy all living things. IF, after the Japanese Empire witnesses our military capability, it does not unconditionally surrender, we will give the people living in the vicinity of the city of Hiroshima 30 days to evacuate before we drop a bomb that will completely destroy up to 20 square kilometers of that area. IF, after we destroy Hiroshima, the Japanese Empire still does not unconditionally surrender, we will drop a second, more powerful bomb, on the city of Nagasaki. Dear People of the Japanese Empire: You have been warned. Please heed our warning and convince your government to surrender.”
Can you imagine how many innocent lives would have been spared? The Izu Peninsula is close enough to Tokyo, valued enough by the people, yet sparsely populated, that it would have made a huge statement of U.S. military power.
It is highly probable that the Japanese Emperor would have done all that he could to avoid another bomb being dropped, had he witnessed what happened to the Izu Peninsula. Innocent civilian casualties: 0
Dropping those bombs on innocent men, women, and children, without warning and giving the Japanese a chance to surrender, was one of the most atrocious acts the United States government has ever done.
THumP® has the solutions. No one else does.®
